Home Renovations

I'm thinking of renovating my home.  In fact, I've created a video tour, if you will, of my planned renovations.  Please let me know what you think of them.

Twilight Moms

Image
With the Twilight  movies and books growing more and more in popularity, it has finally reached the point where its audience has grown beyond tween and teenagers and is now reaching a large, growing adult fan base.  Some of these fans are now known as "Twilight Moms" - adult women who are enthusiastic fans of the series and of the two male characters in particular. Quite frankly, I have a few concerns about this.  My concerns, quite simply, are summed up in this photo that I found on Digg and Facebook. That sums everything up so well.

Happy Thanksgiving

To everyone across the United States and to all of our troops overseas, I want to wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving.  I hope that everyone gets all the turkey that they desire and that they calories magically disappear from one's waist line by Friday morning. To our neighbors to the south ( i.e. , my Canadian friends), I want to wish everyone of you a very happy Thursday . As for myself, I want to share with everyone two of the things that I am thankful for this year. Yes, I am a pervert.  I have come to accept this fact.

Kudos to the Insurance Agent

Image
I went to Del Taco for lunch today and there was an insurance agent in line in front of me. She got two sales leads from complete strangers that she met while standing in line. Now that is some serious hustling, my friends. It's also a reminder that, even in a terrible economy with record unemployment, it's still possible for someone to make money.

'New Moon' shines at box office

Image
$140.7 million in domestic box office?!? I am seriously impressed. I knew that New Moon was going to be big - it has a great cast and good writing that's perfect for the tween audience. However, I didn't think it would be this big.  Kudos to everyone who was a part of this project. 'New Moon' shines at box office Posted using ShareThis

Hollywood Is Re-Thinking A-List Actors, But Are They Right?

Image
Hollywood studios are reportedly rethinking whether or not they should continue spending large sums of cash on A-list celebrities and lavish productions.  This comes in the wake of not only our dismal economy but also - and perhaps more importantly - because of the recent success of low-budget films with relatively unknown casts such as District 9  and The Hangover . This, in my opinion, is one of those moments where Hollywood can either get things horribly, horribly wrong or wonderfully right. I believe that the crucial reason why those low-budget films did extremely well at the box office is that they had a really good story behind them.  I feel that movie audiences are, quite frankly, getting tired of lame, formula driven movies.  Many movie fans can't go to the cinema as often as they would like in the current economy so when they do go, they're looking for the most out of their $8.  Simply dropping one celebrity or another into a mediocre script and pi...

Cool Japanese Bar Code Designs

Image
Japanese designers have a long track record of offering an extraordinary take on ordinary, every day things.  My affinity for their work really began more than a year ago when one particular designer introduced a solar bra that generates electricity .  (Granted, it wouldn't work when covered by clothing.  It was still an interesting idea.) Anyway, the latest cool design to come out of Japan these days is a series of unique bar code designs.  They work just the same as regular, boring versions of the bar code.  However, these are much more interesting. I hope to see some of these designs on packaging soon.

Reebok EasyTone Commercial

The folks at Reebok have introduced their EasyTone shoes. They're inspired by balance balls and are supposed to tone one's butt and legs much more efficiently than conventional shoes. I don't know if there's any validity to that claim. I do, however, know that I love this commercial for the Reebok EasyTone shoes.  I've watched it 11 times so far today. I'll probably watch it several more times before the day is over. Oh, and I'm amused that I found this video on a Friday the 13th. Sometimes some very lucky things can happen on this day.

Irony (Halloween Edition)

There are times when the level of irony is just staggering. An Ohio man dressed as a Breathalyzer test for Halloween found himself blowing into one after police stopped him for allegedly driving the wrong way without headlights on a one-way street.  Police say they stopped 20-year-old James P. Miller on Halloween night and found beer in his front seat and in the trunk. Police say Miller blew 0.158 percent on a Breathalyzer test. The legal limit for driving is a blood-alcohol level of .08.  Miller was cited on charges including operating a vehicle while intoxicated, underage possession of alcohol, having an open container and a fake ID as well as a one-way street violation. Hayden Panettiere's Delicious Tease

Image
I've always been impressed with Hayden Panettierre  - her tremendous acting talent, her raw sensuality and her commitment to causes that she believes in.  There's a lot of wonderful things about her. However, I was floored when I found this video of Hayden Panettierre kissing Madeline Zima in a recent episode of Heroes .  I actually missed it when it originally aired but found it over on Hulu . And once I found it, I kept watching it over and over again. Between this and her recent spread in Elle  magazine, I'm officially in Hayden Panettierre Heaven.  (It's a pleasant place, filled with beautiful women and nothing bad ever happens to any animal anywhere.) With all of this, I'm just that much more disappointed that I didn't get a chance to meet her when she was in Detroit two years ago for an event at the Ronald McDonald House.

Happy Halloween

I made this documentary to show the world what life is like in Casa de Nemecek on All Hallow's Eve.  I hope you like it. Happy Halloween, everyone!

I Love This Video

I found a truly amazing short film on-line that I want to share with everyone.  My first time watching this, I loved the story - simple but incredibly funny.  I then watched it again, thought about what it must have taken to produce this and amazed by it. I don't want to tell too much more, except to give a cautionary warning that it's PG-13 material.  With that in mind, I give you Whose Inside My Baby , written, directed and edited by Mark Jackson . Excellent! Brunette complete strip - kewego A gorgeous brunette slams the door in her date's face, before stripping completely- litterally! Excellent short movie by Mark Jackson. Victoria's Secret Fashion Show

Image
It's getting cold. Winter, unfortunately, will soon be here. Once upon a time, I used to believe that the best thing about winter was Christmas. I'm still a fan of Christmas, but these days I'm an even bigger fan of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. It's like Christmas, with extra cleavage. The show will return to New York for the first time in four years - Tuesday, December 1 on CBS.  I can't believe that it's only 37 days away. Paris Hilton Says She's Secretly Smart

Image
Paris Hilton recently told OK! Magazine that she is secretly smart. She insists that her whole "dumb blonde" act is just that - an act. I've long suspected that Paris Hilton is a lot smarter than she seems in public. I don't think anyone can be that dumb and still function in modern society. Besides, many of the things that she says and does frequently seem like they are calculated for media impact. For Paris Hilton to do such a thing - and translate that celebrity buzz into an industry with her books, music, et cetera - requires a level of cognitive function well beyond what she normally displays. I just wish that Paris Hilton would show her more intellectual side in public. I would love to see Paris Hilton photographed reading a book - an actual work of literature; not a sophomoric piece of fluff. I would love to see Paris Hilton at a film festival - enjoying some of the really good, artistic films that unfortunately never go very far in the modern m...

RIP Soupy Sales

The legendary comedian and one of the finest human beings to ever work in television in Detroit, Soupy Sales , passed away yesterday.  He was 83 years old. Soupy Sales not only personified an era of television in Detroit, he consistently demonstrated the true power of television as a medium.  His show made everyone who watched it feel not only entertained, but a part of something much larger than themselves. His passing leaves a hole in the hearts of many Detroiters, even those who - like myself - weren't even born until long after Soupy Sales left the airwaves.  His jokes were funny enough that people were still retelling them and laughing at them decades later. Luckily, thanks to the miracle of YouTube, Soupy Sales is still available to children young and old "in Living Black and White." Soupy Sales will be missed. If you'll excuse me, I'm off to have a slice of pie in his honor.

Detroit Shock are Moving to Tulsa

The Detroit Shock are reportedly about to move to Tulsa, Oklahoma. I can't say that I really blame them. In a town that has four other professional sports teams already - plus Michigan and Michigan State sports teams - it has been hard for them to generate the attendance that they need. Of course, the saddest part all of this is that the Detroit Lions are staying. Source: Detroit Shock are moving to Tulsa | Detroit Shock - MLive.com - - MLive.com Shared via AddThis

Sanity Preferred: Roo the Day

I found something that I almost couldn't believe on the Sanity Preferred blog - the rise of militant kangaroos. This, my friends, is troubling on so many different levels. Sanity Preferred: Roo the Day Shared via AddThis

Happy Sweetest Day

Image
I've always regarded Sweetest Day is an artificial holiday of no particular significance.  After all, the occasion was started in 1922 by a group of candy manufacturers in Cleveland as part of an effort to sell more candy.  The idea of a holiday tied so closely to commerce simply seemed wrong to me.  As a result, whenever I was dating someone, I always cringed a bit when this holiday rolled around. Of course, this changed the other day. I learned that my parents got engaged 42 years ago today. Suddenly, Sweetest Day doesn't seem so artificial to me. The fact that Sweetest Day started as a thinly veiled commercial undertaking is now tempered, at least in my mind, by the knowledge that there is something significant behind it - even if it's only significant to my parents and to every other couple with a Sweetest Day story behind them. With that in mind, I'd simply like to say, "Happy Sweetest Day everyone!"

Internet outguns TV in U.K. ad fight

It has finally happened - at least in the UK. The internet has outpaced television for advertising revenue. Internet outguns TV in U.K. ad fight Posted using ShareThis

The World Is Your Dressing Room

Gina Valo wrote a great blog post about dating on The Second Fiddle . She compares dating to shopping for jeans. My advice? Treat the world as your dressing room . If something doesn't fit, be polite and put it back on the rack in one piece for someone else to find. It's okay to take something home to try it on in front of your own mirror, but try not to put anything on hold unless there's really a chance you'll come back for it. When you find something worth keeping, treat it well so it lasts forever, and always, always save your receipt. Gina Valo, The Second Fiddle , September 2009 I recommend reading the whole article .
