An Interesting Evening
The Warrendale group on Facebook had its monthly dinner party at Gracie See Pizzeria last night. It was a smaller crowd than usual - just because there were so many things going on around town - but it was still cool. It was our favorite waitress' last day of work there before she moves to Ypsilanti, which is why I didn't want to reschedule for a different day.
Anyway, the other cool thing about that dinner party was that Detroit mayoral candidate Tom Barrow took time out of his schedule to sit down with us. There will be a lot more about that later this afternoon or tomorrow morning over on my neighborhood blog.
After that, I headed over to the Detroit Windsor International Film Festival to see Breaking Upwards, which is a film about a couple whose answer to their perceived state of codependency is to take days off from their relationship, essentially weaning themselves of each other. This is one of those movies that I walked into the theater really wanting to like.
I had heard good things about this film and thought its premise was interesting. The reality, unfortunately, is that it was a decent movie - but not a really good one.
The biggest problem, in my opinion, was with the script. Film is an inherently visual medium, but at least 80% of the story was told through dialogue as opposed to action or visual symbolism. Throughout the entire film, I couldn't help but shake the notion that we were watching the first draft of screenplay and - well - as Earnest Hemingway once opined, "The first draft of anything is shit."
I left with a desire to send the two co-writers a copy of Story by Robert McKee.
Anyway, after leaving, I headed over to the Woodbridge Pub to meet some friends; talking everything from politics to historic preservation to booze to a plan to re-open Baile Corcaigh in the not too distant future.
