My Moment of Political History

James Scripps began publishing The Evening News on August 23, 1873. This newspaper would later become The Detroit News. This was a revolutionary moment in American history because it was the first newspaper to be independent of political parties.

Instead, Mr. Scripps sought to boost circulation by selling ads to make money. It was a good idea.

Of course, as one looks at the situation today - instead of media outlets that are dependent on political parties for support - we have a political party that is largely dependent on a media outlet for its survival.

I wonder what Mr. Scripps would think about Fox News and the modern Republican Party.
