Barcelona Bans Bikinis? Oh, the Brutality

The city of Barcelona, Spain voted recently to ban wearing bikinis anywhere other than swimming pools, beaches, adjacent streets, and beach walks. Anyone caught wearing such an outfit could face a fine ranging from 120 - 300 euros, which translates into $178 - $445.

Quite frankly, I'm not sure what part of this news disturbs me more.

Is it the fact that there will presumably be fewer women wondering the streets of the second largest city in Spain in skimpy bikinis?

Or could it be that I have now seen one more reminder of the fact that the Euro is worth 48% more than the U.S. dollar?

It's really hard to say which one is more troubling to me. I might have to spend some more time looking at this photo of Kristen Bell in a bikini and report back.

I believe I heard a tiny little piece of your heart just fall to the ground and break....

Did they say why? Isn't a large part of Spain Muslim?

I actually spent some time reading about this, when I should have been doing other things.

It's not really a Muslim thing. Just under 90% of Barcelona is Catholic, with an assortment of other religions present.

I think what this boils down to is that there's a general sense in Barcelona is that pretty much everything is welcome, but they believe that everything should have its place. Bikinis are fine, but they should be at the beach.

Barcelona has a HUGE amount of people people living a relatively small amount of space with 40,000 people per square mile. To put that in perspective, NYC only has 27,000 people per square mile.

With so many people so close to one another, it's almost inevitable that folks will step on each other's toes - either literally or figuratively. A system of "everything in its place" flows out of a need to accommodate everyone without everyone wanting to kill each other.
More crowded than NYC....I can't wrap my brain around that. Wow....

Well, they could get around it by wearing halters and micro-minis. I've always heard it's terribly hot there. I would be completely miserable....

Oh, yeah - I'm sure they'll just throw something over their bikini. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if some enterprising individual starts selling cheap halters and such near their beaches for women who forget to bring one, lose it, or whatever.

Gotta be cheaper than the ticket.
